The Lonesome Ace Stringband

The Lonesome Ace Stringband is an old-time band with bluegrass chops that play some righteous folk and country music. There's a depth of groove and sense of space not often heard in bluegrass today, a level of instrumental interplay and vocal blend uncommon in old-time, and an on-stage rapport that transcends all of this.

Three Canadians lost in the weird and wonderful traditional country music of the American South, the band members Chris Coole (banjo), John Showman (fiddle) and Max Heineman (bass) are each journeyman musicians and veterans of some of Canada's top roots music acts (New Country Rehab, The David Francey Band, The Foggy Hogtown Boys, Fiver).

"Old-time roots music played with intensity and passion" - Songlines Magazine

Talk: Danny Dorling - Peak Inequality and the 1%

Danny Dorling
Peak Inequality and the 1%

The UK is currently at a peak of income inequality. From the mid 1970s to now the UK has gone from being the second most equitable large European state (Sweden was first), to by far the most economically inequitable state on the continent. The gap between rich and poor in the UK is greater than anywhere else in Europe. By 2019 life expectancy is falling, infant mortality is rising, and living standards have fallen faster within the last decade than in any previous decade on record – for most people, other than the very rich.
Danny Dorling will examine a few key questions: Why did this happen? What part did the Conservative Party play in achieving it? How might it have been related to Brexit? What other harm does inequality cause? And how quickly can the income and wealth inequalities of the UK be reduced?

Dorling is Halford Mackinder Professor in geography at Oxford University andauthor of Peak Inequality(2018),Inequality and the 1% (Sept 2019, third edition) and Rule Britannia: Brexit and the End of Empire(2019; with Sally Tomlinson).

Chaired by Richard King, author of The Lark Ascending.

Friday Live: The Songs of Nick Drake

A haunting and immaculately crafted concert - The Songs of Nick Drake by Keith James

This concert begins with an introductory set of timeless songs by brilliant songwriters – all contemporary with Nick Drake.

Richard Thompson, Roy Harper, Sandy Denny, Al Stewart, Vashti Bunyan, John Martyn and Bert Jansch.

Nick Drake is the most revered of all this country’s songwriters. He recorded three Albums 1969 - 1972 but was almost entirely unknown in his day. After his death in 1974, aged 26, his music almost disappeared into obscurity. Now, a massive resurgence of interest and a worldwide re-evaluation of his genius, Nick Drake has become a National treasure.

A number of years have now passed since singer/guitarist Keith James paralysed the whole country with his stunningly beautiful series of concerts entitled The Songs of Nick Drake. Keith was the first artist ever to bring this fragile and intriguing music to theatres across the UK in its pure live concert form. The end result has been over a decade of highly acclaimed concerts amounting to thousands of shows in venues in the UK and across Europe including all of Nick’s Schools and Colleges – even Glastonbury Festival.

‘Meticulous dissection of Nick Drake’ idiosyncratic guitar techniques handled with surgical precision’ Northern Sky

‘Some of the most atmospheric and emotive music you will ever hear’  The Independent

‘Keith James has become a pillar of trust. A sublimely intimate and engaging voice’  Sunday Times

Friday Live: Ailsa Tully + support from Gillie

Intricate melodies that weave over brooding basslines, Ailsa Tully is creating an ethereal world that is rooted in folk with darker undertones. Inspired by choral music, folk and indie her sound is haunting, tender and powerful. Her lyrics are both honest and poetic, often exploring feminism and her experiences of being female in her writing.

As a cellist Ailsa has an unusual approach to song writing and arranging; originally she performed using the cello to accompany her voice but has recently turned to the electric bass to explore a different tone. Ailsa has an all-female band which bring her song writing to life, from modal harmonies and driving rhythms to tender emotive melody lines. Ailsa has been featured on BBC radio Wales many times, toured Italy, performed at festivals and venues throughout the country, including Greenman and Ronnie Scotts.

Support comes from Gillie. Her music centers around an alt - pop sound with an undercurrent of folk influenced narrative.

Saturday Shenanigans: Hoodoo Blue

Formed in March 2018 by Missy Edwards and Jools Bath who had previously performed in Somerset’s alternative rock band 'Missart' and Bristol based alt rockers 'Treacle Eater'. Jools has a long history of musical performance having played guitar in West Country cajun folk rock band 'K-Passa' and he currently performs alongside Reef bassist Jack Bessant in his side project 'The Cheddar Experiment Band’ (Ched Ex). This is where he recruited the talents of Oli Lee (Bass) and Pibby (Drums) to join Missy (Vocals) and himself (Guitar) to form Hoodoo Blue. Their first gig was supporting the Ched Ex Band and this led to performances in venues and festivals across England and Wales in 2018 and 2019. Hoodoo Blue released their first EP (Break) in January 2019 and are excited to be going back into the studio in early October 2019 to record their first album.

The title track 'Break' was released in January 2019 on all major digital download platforms, with its first airplay on Glastonbury FM. Friday Live: Son of John & John Parker

After a little antipodean hiatus Son Of John (Jacob Johnson) is back performing with renowned double bassist John Parker. Last year the duo released their debut E.P “Live at Fieldgate Studio”. The duo takes Jacob’s own material as well as traditional songs from both sides of the Atlantic, to create intimate yet vibrant gigs. With the mix of Jacob’s “husky drawl...and.. effortless picking” (Fatea) mixed with John’s ability “teasing the most amazing sounds, bowing, plucking, sawing and downright thrashing to remarkable effect” out of his instrument, the duo wander from old timey foot stompers to slower more ambient songwriter ballads.

“..a series of intricately and sometimes delicately orchestrated, vignettes and ballads that switch in a heartbeat from reference points as diverse as Appalachian Bluegrass to the arid string patterns of the Maghreb.” – Slap Magazine

“....enthused by a deep vocal style amidst a swathe of emotive strings.” - www.threechordsandthetruthuk.co.uk

“The pairing worked well, with Jacob’s husky vocals, and acoustic guitar, being poked and cajoled by the warm bass line stirred by JP.” rhythmbooze.tumblr.com

“As with his debut album, the playing is faultless, the original songs outstanding and, if anything, the intervening 2 years have rendered Jacob's voice even more distinctive.” – Paul Jackson(Fatea)

Saturday Shenanigans: Blackbeard's Tea Party 'Ten YAAR Anniversary Tour'

Blackbeard’s Tea Party’s bold and riotous modern folk rock is built for late nights and big stages. Traditional songs and tunes are given a heavy rock edge with earth shattering riffs, playful arrangements and driving dance rhythms. This is gutsy folk rock dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st Century.

The band celebrate a decade in music in 2019 and will commemorate this with their 'Ten YAAR Anniversary Tour' in the Autumn.

Blackbeard's Tea Party believe a live show should be a spectacle for the eyes as well as the ears. Outlandish outfits, costume changes, DIY props, unhinged stage antics and chaotic choreography all add up to an engaging, high-octane show that inevitably leaves audiences cheering for more.

Their most recent release, the 5-track EP ‘Leviathan!’, explores the romanticized glories and the full gruesome horrors of the 19th century whaling industry. The record brings with it a bigger, bolder sound and a revamped live show, employing a heftier rhythm section with their new double-Drum Kit set up.

Friday Live: The Black Eyed Dogs feat. Ethan Johns

Join The Black Eyed Dogs for an intimate trio show at The Globe in Hay-on-Wye. Helmed by one of the fathers of Americana, Ethan Johns, Black Eyed Dogs have been receiving rave reviews for their compelling live performances.

Dedicated supporters of the independent music scene, The Dogs' latest record “Revelator” is a live album, currently only available on vinyl and made specifically for record store day. The band, including members Nick Pini (bass), Georgina Leach (fiddle), Zero Quixote (guitar), Dan See (drums) and Chris Hillman (pedal steel) are always on the road. Here are a few words from those who have seen and heard Black Eyed Dogs play:

“The other big performance on Friday was Black Eyed Dogs. You won't see a tighter band... their live version of 'Revelator' is possibly the most epic song currently being performed today. It ebbs and flows, hits breakneck jamming before slowing to a roll, quite honestly it's the song of the weekend.” - Digital fix (Black Deer Festival))

“Providing one of the festival’s highlights... the band challenged each other with swift musicianship, electric energy and a euphoric air of joy which was nothing short of intoxicating." - Line of best fit (Black Deer Festival)

“A trip through space and time via the folk roots of new world music.. the songs are incredible..” (Shindig)

Friday Live: Maz O'Connor

Maz spent her teenage years singing in folk clubs, and in 2014 was the recipient of a BBC Performing Arts Fund Fellowship (Adele was a previous recipient) which paired her as an emerging artist in residence with The English Folk Dance and Song Society. During this year she wrote, recorded and released her album ‘This Willowed Light’, which earned her a nomination for the BBC Radio 2 Folk Horizon Award and appearances at high profile festivals such as Cambridge Folk Festival, WOMAD and Glastonbury. The Guardian called it ‘folk album of the year thus far’. Maz began to explore her own songwriting further, addressing themes of Millennial angst in her second album ‘The Longing Kind’, about which Songlines wrote: 'There is an inquiring intelligence as well as an emotional sensibility at work here…she plays and sings beautifully *****'. She toured the U.K. and Europe, including opening for such artists as David Gray, Thomas Dybdahl and Rosanne Cash.

Her background in folk continues to inform her storytelling and feminist themes are a constant in her work: from the song ‘Derby Day’, which she was commissioned to write about Emily Wilding Davison and the feminist re-telling of the creation myth ‘Mississippi Woman’ (both on her first album ‘This Willowed Light’), to the songs giving voice to women in portraits who have been silenced as muses (on her second album ‘The Longing Kind’).

She considers new album ‘Chosen Daughter’ - a collection of darker, story songs - a bigger, more concentrated feminist statement. It is not protest music, but a very personal album which explores, and celebrates, the feminine.
