The Globe provides Hay with a unique and dynamic centre of arts, ideas and performance. This newly established venue along with its rich history, provides an exciting array of events, from art exhibitions to comedy and live music.
This unique position offers an exciting and challenging opportunity to drive the growth of the globe café/bar and contribute to the ongoing success of our arts venture: the Institute of Art and Ideas (IAI), in Hay-on-Wye.
This is a very exciting opportunity to join the Institute of Art and Ideas (IAI) at a key point in its development and play a vital part in its future. We put on events all year round and in addition host an annual philosophy and music festival HowTheLightGetsIn, which is growing rapidly, and attracts national and international speakers.
Reporting directly to the Globe General Manager, the Operations Manager is responsible for the day to day running of the globe, including managing the team, front of house service, achievement of targets and budget control. In addition to this side of the role, the manager is also responsible for raising our profile, fundraising and handling external relations for the globe at hay, along with management of the events team who programme, organize and promote events at the globe.
All applicants should have an excellent educational background and be able to show experience of team management in a café or bar and promotion and fund-raising in the arts. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the ability to motivate and lead others and to convince and win over potential patrons, funders, sponsors, and local interest groups. Above all you will have the charm, force and drive to make things happen. We are an organization in a hurry and we want you to make it happen faster still.

Sous Chef and Summer Kitchen Help- Immediate Start
Off Grid Gourmet at the globe at hay is a busy cafe and restaurant serving lunch, dinner and catering for private events in the beautiful town of Hay-on-Wye. We are looking to hire a SOUS CHEF to help us expand our kitchen team ready for the summer starting immediately. We pride ourselves on making fantastic seasonal dishes using the best local produce and supporting community business. Working alongside Head Chef Hugh Sawyer you will have the opportunity to further gain kitchen and management experience in a professional environment. The position involves adhering to food preparation/ cooking standards, food purchasing and storage and managing daily kitchen operations. You must be a team player with the ability to learn quickly. Hugh trained with Rick Stein, Gerwin Brand, Head chef to Raymond Blanc at Le Manoir, and worked as a private chef for billionaires in Switzerland. Experience in a kitchen environment is essential. For kitchen help, previous experience is not.
Arts and Events Intern
This is a unique opportunity to play a key part in the growth of the Institute of Art and Ideas (IAI), at the globe at hay.
IAI aims to bring new ideas in the arts to the wider public through festivals and regular weekly events. Through your role with the IAI you will be involved in the programming and coordination of a variety of events at the the globe in Hay on Wye. The events range from comedy and cultural evenings, live music and debates to parties and community events. You will also be involved in our annual festival, HowTheLightGetsIn, which is the world's largest philosophy and music festival, attracting thousands of visitors to the venue.
There is scope for somebody to take on a great deal of responsibility and gain valuable arts management experience. This is a challenging and varied opportunity that will really open doors for a graduate who is keen to start a career in the arts or events. All applicants should have an excellent education background, and a keen interest in and knowledge of arts and culture in general. Experience of putting on events and/or promotion and marketing will obviously be an advantage. The successful candidate will also be able to demonstrate project management, journalistic and PR skills.
This is a 3 month placement which could potentially lead to a more permanent position.
